Organisation profile
ETH Zurich is a science and technology university with an outstanding research record. It is the study, research and work place of over 18,000 people from 80 nations. About 400 professors in 16 departments teach mainly in the engineering sciences and architecture, system-oriented sciences, mathematics and natural sciences areas and carry out research that is highly valued worldwide.
IWF has its roots in the Machine Tool Laboratory which was founded in 1939 at ETH Zurich. It gained over the last decades a holistic and detailed insight in the field of production while carrying out various national and international research projects with industry. The research focus at IWF is in machine tools, production systems and manufacturing processes. Within this scope, innovative manufacturing technologies are subject to current research performed at IWF. Commercial and self-developed simulation tools are used for modelling, analysing and optimising production systems and processes.
Relevant Expertise
IWF has broad experience and know-how in various micro and macro machining processes. A particular research focus is on grinding processes and tools with super abrasives as well as innovative conditioning methods for grinding and dressing tools, including laser based processes. Furthermore, the experience of ETHZ in international/national research projects with industry participation will facilitate ETHZ’s role as the project coordinator.
